After a whirlwind trip through Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, we arrived in picturesque Tuscany for a friends’ wedding. With its rolling hills, beautiful vineyards and charming hilltop towns, it’s easy to fall in love with Tuscany.
During college, I spent four months studying abroad in Florence, Italy so I was excited to be back and immerse myself in Italian culture, cuisine and enjoy ‘la dolce vita’! We arrived in Poppi, Italy, our home base for the week while exploring Tuscany.
With its lush hills, hilltop castle tower and village, Poppi is the ultimate Tuscan town! We spent our first day exploring the town — visiting the Poppi castle and climbing the bell tower, as well as indulging in a delicious pappardelle bolognese dinner.
Then, we set off to explore Florence. We had my ‘perfect day’ in Florence — roaming the narrow streets until we couldn’t walk anymore, stopping at the Mercado Centrale to browse the local goods, eating Gusta Pizza on the steps of Basilica, and watching the sunset at Hotel Continental’s rooftop bar. Florence is definitely one of those cities where I feel most at home!
The next few days were spent lounging by the pool under the Tuscan sun (just like the movie, ha!), wine tasting at nearby vineyards, making friends with the locals and eating pasta to our hearts content.
One of our last day trips was to Arezzo, a larger Tuscan city with… I hadn’t heard much about Arezzo before visiting and I’m not sure why because the city was so charming!
It had all the makings of a picturesque Tuscan town: cobblestone streets, Renaissance style architecture, portico walkways, and quaint outdoor restaurants as well as a beautiful piazza in the center of town.
We spent the morning exploring and ended our time there with a delicious lunch of truffle pasta (yep, it truly was the summer of truffles!) in the piazza.
