While I’m traveling, I love being able to capture the moment. Being able to have memories and experiences to look back on is incredible — when I look through my photos, it’s like being transported back to that moment!
Now, I’m almost always traveling with a camera so that I’m ready to capture a beautiful sunset, a crazy experience, a gourmet meal or even an adorable puppy. I purchased my first DSLR camera in my early twenties and I’ve been slowly adding to my photography gear collection ever since.
And while I’m definitely not a professional photographer, I still love learning and experimenting with photography.
Here is my favorite travel photography gear!
Cameras & Lenses
Beginner: Sony Alpha A6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera
Mirrorless cameras are fantastic for traveling with! Because of their smaller size, they are much easier to fit in your bag and carry around. Sony’s Alpha A6000 is perfect for beginners looking for a quality camera at a good price point.
Intermediate: Sony Alpha A6500 Mirrorless Digital Camera
Ready to upgrade your mirrorless camera? The Sony Alpha A6500 is the camera I use most out of my travel photography gear and I love its features. It has the world’s fastest auto focus speed (0.05 sec.) and in-camera image stabilization for every lens. And if you looking for more that just images, this camera has incredible 4K movie recording capabilities.
Sony 18-105mm Lens
This is the lens I use most frequently on my Sony Alpha A6500! It’s has excellent resolution throughout the zoom range –and it covers a 6x zoom range with a constant F4 aperture. I always make sure to bring it along for landscape, city, and nature photography.
Sony 50mm f/1.8 Lens
This compact lens packs a punch with seriously impressive image quality! It’s perfect for those detailed shots, portraits and food photography (which means everything looks #Yum!).
Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II Digital Camera
With its compact design and impressive video capabilities, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is the ultimate vlogging camera. It has excellent image quality even in low-light situations, auto focus tracking and even built-in WiFi so you can send those photos straight to your phone for Instagram!
GoPro
Out of all the travel photography gear, the GoPro is definitely best for adventure! It’s waterproof design means that I can pack it for the beach and capture underwater adventures or on a ski trip when it’s dumping snow. And its convenient small size doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice quality — the image quality is excellent and it shoots in 4K!
Unlocked iPhone
If you’re not ready to invent in a DSLR camera yet, don’t worry! The camera technology on smartphones has drastically progressed and the quality is better than ever before. I find that having an unlocked iPhone is especially helpful for traveling internationally so that I can switch out the SIM cards as I go. That way, I can have my phone with me everywhere to capture photos and upload directly to social media!
Thinking about adding a drone to your travel photography gear? Since they came on the market, drone technology has progressed very quickly. The DJI Mavic Pro 2 has a flight range of just over 4 miles and has obstacle detection, precision hover and can even auto land back to its launch point. It also has an improved battery life of 30 minutes! The camera is equally as impressive with excellent image quality, 4K video shooting and 24 – 48mm optical zoom. And with its sleek design that allows the drone to fold up, it can easily fit in your backpack so you can bring it anywhere!
DJI Spark
The DJI Spark has many of the same great features of the DJI Mavic Pro but at a lower price point. It’s smaller size allows it to fit in (and take off from!) the palm of your hand and the gesture control means you can easily take photos — perfect for drone newbies!
Travel Photography Gear Accessories:
Leather Camera Bag
Because I like to carry my camera with me pretty much everywhere, I look for camera bags that don’t stand out as.. camera bags! I opted for a camera bag that looked more like a purse with quality leather and a crossbody strap.
SanDisk SD Cards & SanDisk microSD Card
One of my least favorite things is getting a ‘Memory Card Full’ message when I’m trying to capture a photo while traveling! I always make sure to carry several 64GB or 128GB SD cards and a few microSD cards for drone and GoPro footage.
SD Card Holder
I recently purchased an SD card holder after I lost an SD card and I don’t want to be dramatic but… it’s life changing. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration but it makes me feel a whole lot more organized!
UV Filters
UV filters are an important addition to your travel photography gear! These filters help to block out ultra violet light which can cause blur so that you have higher image quality. They also act as a protective layer to your lenses to avoid dirt, scratches and smudges (so important!). I have a 72mm UV Filter for my 18-105mm lens and a 49mm UV Filter for my Sony 50mm lens.
Lightweight Tripod
Tripods are an excellent tool to improve your photo and video skills. With the camera supported by a tripod, you’ll have the stability you need to get the perfect steady shot!
Gorillapod Tripod
This small, flexible tripod has bendable legs so you can set it up almost anywhere to get the shot! And it easily fits in a backpack or purse — perfect if you aren’t able to bring your larger tripod.
iPhone Tripod
Having a little tripod for my iPhone is so helpful for capturing time lapses or video that isn’t shaky. And this tripod features flexible legs so you can wrap it on chair, bike or pretty much anything else!
GoPro Waterproof Hand Grip
This is my favorite GoPro accessory and I pretty much leave my GoPro camera on it at all times. And it’s waterproof so you’ll have no trouble capturing those underwater shots!
GoPro Dome Port Lens
Ever wonder how to capture those shots that simultaneously show both above and below water? Try out the dome accessory that makes these shots possible!
Extra Batteries
One of the most important additions to your travel photography gear is gaving extra batteries for all your devices! This will help you avoid a dead camera when you’re trying to shoot. I use the GroPro Dual Battery Charger + Extra Batteries for my GoPro, and make sure to carry extra Sony Camera Batteries, Canon PowerShot batteries and drone batteries!
External Hard Drive
With a large volume of photos, additional storage space is sometimes necessary. An external hard drive can help supplement your laptop’s storage and avoid any problems!
