Canggu, the up-and-coming hip surf town, is known for it’s boho vibe, low key hang outs, and healthy cafes. The endless rice paddies with lush greenery and almost five miles of coastline make it the ultimate tropical paradise getaway.
Located next to trendy Seminyak and an easy trip to Tanah Lot, Canggu is ideally located for exploring more of Bali. And, while this boho beach town is still up-and-coming, it’s growing quickly!
Here are 10 of my favorite things to do while in Canggu.
1 – Eat a Smoothie Bowl
Canggu is filled with tons of healthy cafes and delicious smoothie bowl options. You’ll find fresh, locally sourced and organic ingredients, as well as plenty of vegan options. One of my favorite spots for a sweet and refreshing treat is Nalu Bowls. They have multiple locations in Bali, including Canggu. Each of their bowls are made from fresh, local ingredients and are named after famous waves around the world!
2 – Visit the Rice Paddies
Bali has become known for its lush rice paddies that sprawl for miles with beautiful reflections of the sky. And while Ubud has the famous Tegalalang rice terraces, Canggu also boasts some beautiful fields. You’ll see miles of them while driving through Canggu — they are the perfect place for a photo op or two!
3 – Stay in a Villa
Luxury villa rentals are popping up all around Canggu and are cheaper to rent than in many other countries. Many of the villas are nestled in the lush jungle with private swimming pools giving you a secluded paradise all to yourself. Check out the many Airbnb rentals for your next Bali visit! 4 – Head to the Beach + Surf
After all, Canggu is a surf destination! Spend the day at Batu Balong or Echo Beach for some relaxation — watch the surfers or join in and make sure to stay for sunset.
5 – Spend an Afternoon at The Lawn
Speaking of sunsets, one of the best places to watch the show is at The Lawn Canggu. It’s a local’s favorite hangout situated right on Batu Balong and is the perfect place to soak in the local surf culture while sipping on a coconut drink. Read all about my experience at The Lawn here.
6 – Go Shopping
Where there are many tourist shops around Bali, there are also some very unique artisan finds that you’ll want to take home! Shopping in the Canggu area, you’ll find handmade jewelry, dream catchers, clothing and home goods. Check out Love Anchor for a variety of local retailers and food vendors.
7 – Explore a Temple
Beautiful ancient temples can be found all throughout the island and Canggu is a great base for exploring them. At the temples, you can expect centuries-old architecture, beautiful backdrops and cute (but mischievous!) monkeys. One of the most well-known temples is Tanah Lot which is just a 30-minute ride from Canggu.
8 – Check out the Nightlife
With the surfing, digital nomad and expat communities has come the nightlife. While Canggu is a little more low-key compared to neighboring Seminyak, there are still plenty of nightlife options. Check out Old Man’s Bar, Finn’s Beach Club, Deus Ex Machina, or Sand Bar for some fun in Canggu.
9 – Lounge at La Laguna
One of the best spots to grab a drink and just chill is La Laguna — oh, and you’ll want to bring your camera along because it’s so dreamy! La Laguna is a tapas restaurant and bar situated right on the beach with a beautifully ornate bridge that overlooks a lagoon. The restaurant and bar is set in a lush garden complete with carved gypsy wagons and batik cushions for lounging. This boho-chic spot is a must — try to go at sunset, you’ll thank me later! 🙂 Read all about what you can expect at La Laguna here.
10 – Eat Traditional Balinese Food
One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to eat the local food… and you cannot miss eating the delicious Balinese food! Try a chicken sate (or ‘satay’), nasi goreng (fried rice) or nasi campur from one of the many warungs.
