How to Get to Vail
Getting to the town of Vail is pretty straightforward! The first decision you’ll have to make is whether to fly into Eagle County Regional Airport or Denver International Airport. Let’s take a look at each option:
From Denver:
Flying in: First, you’ll want to fly into Denver International Airport (DEN) if you’re coming from out of the country or even from out of state. Denver Airport is a huge hub serving major airlines with flights from all over the world. It’s the most popular gateway to Colorado’s mountains, and from here, you have a few options to reach the snowy paradise of Vail.
From Denver by Car: If you’re up for a scenic drive, renting a car is a fantastic option! From Denver, hop on I-70 West. It’s about a two-hour drive, winding through breathtaking mountain views. Make sure to check for winter weather conditions if you’re coming during ski season, as the mountain roads can get snowy!
Shuttle Services: Not in the mood to drive? No problem! There are shuttle services like Epic Mountain Express that provide direct rides from Denver International straight to Vail Village. You can sit back, relax, and let someone else handle the mountain roads for you.
From Eagle County Airport:
Alternatively, you could fly directly into Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), which is just about 30–40 minutes from Vail and super convenient! Many major airlines like Delta, American and United serve the Eagle County Regional Airport with seasonal flights from Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Phoenix and more.
And, from Eagle County Airport, you’re so close! There are shuttle services, car rentals, and even Uber or Lyft options that’ll take you to Vail in under an hour!
When is the Winter Season in Vail?
Vail’s ski season usually kicks off in mid-November and runs all the way to mid-April! Opening and closing dates can vary slightly each year based on snowfall, but you can expect those winter wonderland vibes in full swing through these winter months.
Early season (November to December) can be magical but might have limited terrain open. By late December to February, you’ll find peak conditions, with most of the mountain open and lots of powder. Then, March and early April offer warmer, sunny days — perfect for cruising the slopes and après-ski fun!
Tips for Visiting Vail in the Winter
To make the most of your visit to Vail in the winter, there are some helpful tips you should know while planning your trip to this mountain paradise:
- Plan for Altitude: Vail sits at over 8,000 feet, so take it easy on your first day to acclimate. Stay hydrated and consider spending a little time at lower elevations if you feel any altitude sickness.
- Dress in Layers: The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so dressing in layers is key. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulation, and top it off with a waterproof shell. Don’t forget sunscreen for those sunny slopes!
- Get an Epic Pass: If you plan to ski or snowboard multiple days or visit other resorts, look into the Epic Pass. It provides access to Vail and several other resorts and can save you money on lift tickets.
- Explore Beyond the Slopes: While skiing is a highlight, Vail has so much more to offer. Try snowshoeing, dog sledding, or take a sleigh ride for a different kind of mountain adventure.
- Make Dinner Reservations: Vail has fantastic dining options, but popular spots can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Make reservations in advance to secure your desired dining experiences.
- Utilize the Free Bus System: Vail has a great public transportation system that makes it easy to get around without needing a car. The free bus service connects Vail Village, Lionshead, and nearby areas, so you can explore effortlessly. I’ve used it several times and it really is such an easy way to get around Vail!
- Check Out Events and Festivals: Vail hosts a variety of events throughout the winter, from ski competitions to music festivals. Check the calendar before your visit to see if anything special is happening during your stay.
Packing for Vail in the Winter
Packing for a winter trip to Vail is all about staying warm, comfortable, and prepared for the wide variety of things to do in Vail — like going from the top of the mountain to the cozy indoors for après-ski! Here’s a list of essentials to consider:
Ski Gear: If you’re skiing or snowboarding, make sure to pack your own gear if you have it, including skis or snowboard, boots, poles, and helmet. If not, you can rent equipment on-site.
Ski Clothing & Accessories:
- Base Layers: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms are crucial for staying warm.
- Insulating Layer: Fleece or down jackets are great for warmth.
- Waterproof Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof ski jacket and pants will keep you dry and protected from the elements.
- Ski Socks: Bring several pairs of warm, moisture-wicking ski socks. Avoid cotton!
- Warm Hat: A beanie or a hat that covers your ears is essential.
- Gloves or Mittens: Waterproof and insulated options will keep your hands warm.
- Neck Gaiter or Buff: Protect your face from the cold wind.
- Sunglasses and Goggles: Protect your eyes from glare on the slopes and from the sun
- Snow Boots: Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction are perfect for walking around the village.
- Backpack: A small backpack is handy for carrying essentials while on the slopes, like snacks, water, and an extra layer.
Winter Clothing & Accessories:
Even when you’re off the slopes, you’ll want to wear warm clothing and pack layers. Pack for stylish yet functional winter outfits to stay warm and comfortable — like cozy sweaters, jeans or insulated pants, and a warm, waterproof coat for strolling through the village. Insulated, waterproof snow boots with good traction are essential for icy sidewalks, paired with thick, wool socks. Add winter accessories like a cute beanie, a scarf, and warm gloves to complete your look.
Personal Items:
- Camera: Vail’s stunning mountain views, charming village streets, memorable moments on the slopes, and all the fun things to do in Vail in the winter are worth capturing. Whether it’s for professional-quality photos or personal memories, a camera ensures you can preserve the magic of your trip.
- Electrolytes: The high altitude in Vail can leave you feeling dehydrated more quickly, especially if you’re skiing or hiking. Electrolytes help replenish vital minerals and keep you energized, combating the effects of altitude and dry air.
- Aquaphor: The cold, dry mountain air can be tough on your skin, leading to chapping and dryness. Aquaphor is a versatile balm that soothes dry lips, cracked hands, and even windburn, keeping your skin hydrated and protected.
- Hair Spray: Whenever I travel to the mountains, I always struggle with static cling! Winter hats and helmets can wreak havoc on your hair and hair spray will help tame your static cling flyaways… I even use when I get static cling on my clothes!
- Hand & Toe Warmers: These little lifesavers are perfect for keeping warm during frigid days on the slopes or while strolling through the village. Slip them into gloves or boots for extra warmth and comfort in the cold.
- Sunscreen: The sun at high altitudes is surprisingly intense, especially when reflected off the snow. Sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from UV rays, even on overcast days, ensuring you avoid unexpected sunburn.
And just like that — now you know all the best things to do in Vail in the winter! Now, you’re ready to hit the slopes, sip on some hot cocoa, take in the beautiful views and enjoy some crisp mountain air! It’s time to start planning your next winter vacation to beautiful Vail, Colorado.
