San Miguel de Allende has been on my bucket list for many years now… Because who wouldn’t want to visit the No. 1 city in the world? Yep, that’s right — San Miguel de Allende was named the No. 1 city in the world by Travel + Leisure!
Located in the central Mexico state of Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende is a fascinating town that draws visitors from all over the world. So, let’s dive into the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende!
About San Miguel de Allende
Visiting San Miguel de Allende is like stepping into a vibrant, colorful dream filled with rich history, stunning colonial architecture, and artistic charm. This UNESCO World Heritage city is known for its picturesque cobblestone streets, breathtaking churches like the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, and a thriving arts scene.
It really is a magical destination that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits!
San Miguel has long been a haven for artists from around the world. In the mid-20th century, it became a popular destination for American expatriates, artists, and writers who fell in love with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. Today, it remains a mecca for art lovers, with numerous galleries, workshops, and art festivals held throughout the year.
The town is also part of the Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) program in Mexico, which designates towns with special cultural or historical significance. San Miguel’s mix of history, art, and stunning natural beauty earned it this prestigious title!
After visiting, I can absolutely see why it has been designated both a UNESCO World Heritage city and Pueblos Mágico, it really is a special place.
Whether you’re exploring lively markets, savoring delicious Mexican cuisine on a rooftop terrace, or soaking in the natural hot springs just outside town, every moment here feels magical. The city’s warm hospitality and year-round festivals make it an unforgettable destination that blends old-world charm with modern creativity!
How to Get There
Getting to San Miguel de Allende can be an adventure in itself, but don’t worry, I’ll break down all the travel options for you!
The closest major airports are Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) in León and Querétaro International Airport (QRO). BJX is about a 1.5-hour drive, while QRO is slightly closer at around an hour. You can book a private car, shared shuttle, or take a taxi from either airport to reach San Miguel.
Guanajuato Bajio International Airport (BJX) has direct flights from Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and plenty of domestic cities. While, Querétaro International Airport (QRO) has direct flights from Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and domestic cities.
If you’re flying into Mexico City (MEX), it’s about a 3.5 to 4-hour drive or bus ride. Of course, Mexico City will have the most (and probably cheapest!) flight options with domestic and international flights from around the wold. To get to San Miguel de Allende, many travelers either set up a private transfer or opt for a luxury bus from Mexico City’s North Bus Terminal (like ETN or Primera Plus) to nearby Querétaro or directly to San Miguel.
So what’s the best airport option for you?
It depends on where you’re coming from! If you’re coming from outside of the US or Mexico, flying into Mexico City will give you the best flight options. Plus, Mexico City is absolutely worth exploring and is a great add-on to your itinerary. So if you’re keen on visiting both cities in one trip, this would be a good option. Otherwise, if you’re just visiting San Miguel de Allende, I’d go with BJX or QRO as they’re much closer to San Miguel!
We flew in and out of Guanajuato Bajio International Airport and had a seamless experience! The airport was updated and even had a Priority Pass Lounge that we enjoyed before our flight.
We organized transportation to San Miguel through our hotel on the way there, and organized it ourself on the way back. The drive took about 1.5 – 2 hours and was very pleasant with scenic views of the countryside, ranches and highlands.
Hot Tip: We got the transportation company’s information from our driver on the way there and reached out to them directly for the way home — and it cost just half the price that the hotel charged us! The company we used (and I’d definitely recommend) is San Miguel Eco Turistic.
Once you arrive in the city, the best way to explore is on foot—San Miguel’s charming cobblestone streets are best enjoyed by strolling… Almost all the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende you can walk to!

My two cents: We stayed at the Hotel Matilda and loved it! It felt very hip — we enjoyed the bar and pool area, the ramen restaurant upstairs and the staff were all so lovely and attentive. Plus, the hotel is really centrally located so you can pretty much walk to all the things to do in San Miguel de Allende!
We also visited the Rosewood and the Belmond hotels—the two most popular luxe hotels in the city—so I can tell you my thoughts on each! The Rosewood was a gorgeous, expansive property that has incredible views, a large swimming pool area and plenty of amenities and services. For example, they even have babysitting services and the “Rosewood Explorers Club” for kids. I could see us staying here in the future with friends and family. On the other end, the Belmond hotel feels very tucked into the town (it’s split into two historic buildings in central San Miguel) and has an ultra romantic and charming atmosphere. My husband and I would definitely opt to stay here for our next romantic getaway!

When to Visit
The best time to visit San Miguel de Allende depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for, but in general, it really is a year-round destination with the most pleasant months being November to April when the weather is sunny, dry, and perfect for exploring.
- Fall & Winter (November–February): Ideal for comfortable sightseeing with mild, sunny days and cool nights. The city is especially magical in December with festive lights and holiday celebrations.
- Spring (March–April): Beautiful weather with blooming jacaranda trees lining the streets, making the city extra picturesque. Side note: if you add Mexico City on to your itinerary with San Miguel, you’ll see tons and tons of these gorgeous jacaranda trees blooming there at this time as well!
- Summer (May–September): Warmer with occasional rain showers, but still a great time to visit if you want fewer crowds and lush scenery.
We visited in April and couldn’t have dreamed up more perfect weather! We actually had just been in Tulum where it was hot and humid so we were pleasantly surprised to find that San Miguel de Allende was not too hot at all. The city is located in Mexico’s central highlands and sits at 6,140 ft elevation and it really has nice, crisp air and perfect sunny days!
Is San Miguel de Allende Safe?
This is a question that many people ask when talking about destinations in Mexico…
And the answer is, San Miguel de Allende is considered one of the safest destinations in Mexico, especially for tourists!
Actually, the city has a very strong expat community — we met tons of Americans, Canadians and even Brits — as well as a welcoming atmosphere, and a well-patrolled historic center that feels very secure.
That said, it’s always smart to follow general travel safety tips:
- Stick to well-lit, populated areas, especially at night.
- Use registered taxis or ride-share services instead of hailing a random cab.
- Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
- Be mindful of ATM use—opt for machines inside banks rather than street kiosks. (Although, I did use some street ATMs in San Miguel but had no issues!)
Most visitors feel very comfortable doing all the things to do in San Miguel de Allende on foot, enjoying its charming streets, vibrant markets, and rooftop restaurants without concern. San Miguel de Allende’s historic city center is filled with cobblestone streets, colorful colonial-era architecture, and vibrant culture. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s the heart and soul of the city, brimming with history, art, and a lively atmosphere.
At the center of it all is El Jardín, the town’s main plaza, where locals and visitors gather to relax, enjoy live music, and take in the breathtaking view of La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. Surrounding the square, you’ll find stunning 17th- and 18th-century buildings, gorgeous archways, and charming courtyards filled with cafés, boutiques, and art galleries.
Wandering through the historic center, you’ll discover hidden courtyards, rooftop terraces, and artisan markets, where you can shop for everything from handwoven textiles to intricate silver jewelry. Fábrica La Aurora, a former textile factory turned art and design center, is a must for art lovers.

My husband and I had so much fun just walking around town — me stopping to take a million pictures of the breathtaking architecture and him stopping to taste test all the different taco stands!

La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is the most iconic landmark in San Miguel de Allende and one of the most stunning churches in Mexico. It’s in the heart of the historic center, and this iconic pink church looks like something out of a fairy tale!
Its design was inspired by European cathedrals, but with a unique twist—local stonemason Zeferino Gutiérrez crafted its famous facade in the late 19th century, reportedly using postcards of European churches as inspiration.

While you’re at the Mercado de Artesanías, you should also plan to visit the Ignacio Ramírez Market as they are connected and are essentially part of the same market area.
While the Mercado de Artesanías is all about crafts, textiles, and handmade items, the Ignacio Ramírez Market is more focused on food, produce, and everyday goods. Because they’re so close to each other, you can easily stroll between the two and enjoy the different experiences each offers.
The Ignacio Ramírez Market is one of the most vibrant and lively markets and definitely one of the top things to do in San Miguel de Allende! It’s a wonderful place to experience the local culture and get a true sense of everyday life in San Miguel.
This bustling market offers a mix of fresh produce, artisan goods, and local specialties. You’ll find an incredible selection of fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses, as well as handcrafted items, like jewelry, textiles, pottery, and traditional Mexican crafts. It’s also a great spot to pick up some authentic Mexican spices or chile to bring home as souvenirs!
The market is especially known for its colorful displays, friendly vendors, and authentic atmosphere. If you’re a foodie, this is a great place to sample local street food—you’ll want to try some tacos, tamales, or quesadillas from one of the market stalls. Dinner at Tostévere
All the food we had on our visit was delicious but Tostévere was such a highlight for me, I feel it deserves its own spot on this list of top things to do in San Miguel de Allende!
Tostévere is somewhat of a hidden gem, known for its incredible gourmet tacos, craft cocktails, and cozy, intimate atmosphere. It’s a small but stylish spot with warm lighting, an open kitchen, and a modern yet rustic design that makes you feel right at home.
The menu focuses on elevated Mexican flavors, with creative takes on classic dishes. Their tacos are the star of the show, especially the short rib taco, which is slow-cooked to perfection and packed with rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavor. Other favorites include the duck carnitas tacos and the tuna tostada, both beautifully plated and bursting with fresh ingredients.
The tuna tostada was probably my favorite dish — absolutely chef’s kiss! And the smoky mezcal cocktail was topped with homemade coconut cream and a sprig of rosemary that was briefly lit on fire creating a super smoky aroma. It was hands down the best mezcal cocktail I’ve ever had and perhaps one of the best cocktails of all time!
Beyond tacos, they offer small plates and shareable dishes, making it a great place for a fun, social dining experience. And don’t skip the cocktails—their mezcal and tequila-based drinks are expertly crafted, pairing perfectly with the bold flavors of the food.
Since it’s a small space, reservations are highly recommended, especially for dinner. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back yet refined meal or just want some of the best tacos in town, Tostévere is an absolute must-visit in San Miguel!

Located on a hilltop, it gives you an unbeatable perspective of the town’s cobblestone streets, church spires, and lush hillsides—and of course, that iconic view of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.
It’s a favorite spot for both locals and tourists looking to take in the city from above, and it’s especially magical during sunset when the colors of the sky cast a warm glow over the entire town.
The lookout itself is a relaxed and peaceful spot to enjoy the views, with some benches and a small area for sitting and soaking it all in. You’ll often see photographers and couples enjoying the moment, making it an ideal stop for anyone wanting to capture the beauty of San Miguel. It’s also a great place to go for a bit of quiet time and reflect on the incredible scenery around you!
If you’re feeling adventurous, El Mirador is easily accessible by foot from the town center, though it’s an an uphill walk and a bit of a workout. We welcomed the opportunity to work off some calories after eating lots of tacos though! Otherwise, you could take a taxi up to the lookout and walk down.
It’s was really nice to appreciate San Miguel’s charm from a higher perspective—definitely worth the visit!

One of the park’s highlights is its fountain at the center, which is surrounded by lush plants and vibrant flowers—giving the park a colorful and inviting feel. You’ll also find plenty of benches and paths where you can sit and watch the world go by, or you can enjoy a nice, slow walk while taking in the fresh air.
It’s the perfect spot to unwind, have a picnic, or simply sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
