Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake with crystal clear waters and is set in Triglav National Park, home of Slovenia’s Julian Alps. During the winter, the area is a popular ski destination with Mount Vogel sitting at 6,300 feet. But during the summer, the area is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the lake.
We spent our days in Lake Bohinj on the beautiful lake, hiking, and exploring Mount Vogel.
Here’s the ultimate guide to Lake Bohinj, Slovenia!
WHAT TO DO
Whether you’re planning a winter getaway or looking for sunny lake days, Lake Bohinj has tons of natural beauty and outdoor activities to offer.
- Enjoy the lake — Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake with some of the clearest water I’ve ever seen! While it can be quite cold to swim in (even during the summer!), there are plenty of activities on the water. Rent a stand-up paddle board or kayak and go on a self-guided lake tour. Or, hop on one of the two tour boats leaving from Ribčev Laz.
- Hiking — Lake Bohinj is nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps, providing some of the most beautiful hiking trails I’ve seen! Check out some of the hiking trail options here.
- Slap Savica — This stunning waterfall flows with glacial water that eventually feeds down into Lake Bohinj. Hike up to the waterfall to see the emerald green pool and views over Lake Bohinj.
- Vogel Mountain — From December to May, Vogel Ski Resort is open for both skiing and snowboarding. During the summer, take the cable car to the top to the enjoy breathtaking views and hit the hiking trails.
- Triglav National Park — Lake Bohinj is located in Slovenia’s only national park! Go beyond the lake and explore more of the national park — with beautiful gorges and picturesque towns, there’s a ton to explore. Kranjska Gora is another can’t miss spot!
WHERE TO STAY
This serene lake offers cozy ski chalets set on the lake as your base for exploring!
- Chalet Zlatorog — The cutest chalet I ever did see! We felt right at home in this spacious wooden home set just five minutes from the lake in the small town of Ukanc. It had modern elements with an upgraded kitchen and bathroom and all of the amenities we needed (including WiFi!).
- Hotel Stare — Another great option in peaceful Ukanc, Hotel Stare has clean, modern rooms and minutes from the lake.
