There is no place in the world quite like the stunning Algarve coast. Portugal is an incredibly beautiful and diverse country and the coastline of the south is no different. From the dramatic cliffs hanging over the rocky coastline, to the blue turquoise waters and white sand beaches, the Algarve coast has some of the most spectacular views in the world. With an ideal location for exploring the region, Lagos has become a popular destination on the coast.

With some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, the laid-back seaside town of Lagos is the perfect base for exploring the southern coastline of Portugal. Lagos is easily reached by train, bus or car and is approximately 1.5 hours from Faro’s airport or 4 hours from Lisbon.
WHAT TO DO
With its stunning coastline, Lagos has plenty to offer.
- Explore the Beaches — with some of the best beaches in Europe, you cannot miss exploring several of the beaches in and around Lagos. My favorites were Ponta da Piedade, Praia do Camilo, Praia da Batata, and Praia dos Estudantes!
- Surfing — Lagos is a popular surf destination; rent boards from Lagos Surf Center in town and walk over to Praia da Batata to catch some waves!
- Kayaking — there are many kayaking tours offered throughout town and leave daily to explore the sea caves ofPonta da Piedade. You won’t want to miss exploring the gorgeous Benagil sea cave!
- Boat Tour — similar to kayaking, this is a great way to explore the coastline and sea caves that are only accessibly by boat or kayak.
- Hiking — this is the best way to soak in the views from Ponta da Piedade! Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and summertime heat.
WHERE TO DINE
With tons of restaurant options in town, these stood apart from the rest.
- Taninos — while most of the restaurants in the center of town are quite touristy, this cute restaurant serves up fresh, delicious and authentic Portuguese tapas and wine.
- Casinha do Petisco — after working up an appetite exploring, come hungry to this authentic Portuguese restaurant with large portions! Plan to arrive on the early side to avoid waiting or make a reservation in advance, and make sure to have cash on hand as credit cards are not accepted.
- Restaurante dos Artistas — for a fine dining experience, check out this Michelin recognized restaurant located in the center of Lagos.
- A Petisqueira — serving up Portuguese food with a twist, this restaurant has plenty of authentic and delicious seafood options.
WHERE TO STAY
Lagos has everything from luxury resorts to budget hostels.
- Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort — this large resort has beautiful, updated rooms as well as several dining options and pools. The best feature though is the location; its within walking distance to cliffs with jaw-dropping views!
- Airbnb — there are plenty of rental options throughout Lagos, many of which are budget-friendly!
