Hallstatt is a fairytale town set in the Austrian mountains overlooking a serene lake. I’ve been dreaming about visiting this charming, little town and finally got to see it in real life this past summer — and it was even more beautiful than I expected.
Strolling the quaint streets and having coffee on the glistening lake with swans swimming by, I had to pinch myself to make sure it was real life!
After spending a few days in this enchanting town, I’ve rounded up everything you need to know about visiting Hallstatt.
Here is the ultimate guide to Hallstatt, Austria!
HOW TO GET THERE
Hallstatt’s location is one of the things that makes it so beautiful! However, it does take a bit of planning to reach the town — here’s everything you need to know before you go.
- By Car: Austria is an excellent country for a road trip; the roads are easy to navigate and the countryside views are stunning! If you plan to rent a car and drive to the small town of Hallstatt — which I would highly recommend — there are a few things to note. Since the town is so small, there is no parking for tourists in the town. Instead, there are several parking lots just outside of town where you can park and take the shuttle into town. You can still plan to put in ‘Hallstatt’ as your GPS location but when you arrive, just follow the signs for ‘Parkplatz P1/3’ or ‘Parkplatz P2’ (summer only) and then park and request a shuttle from the ticket office area.
- By Train / Ferry: Taking the train is another great way to reach Hallstatt — especially in the winter when the roads can be covered in snow! Take the train to the Hallstatt station, which is located on the opposite side of the lake to the town, and then take the ferry (which leaves hourly) to the town’s center.
WHAT TO DO
This charming town nestled in the Austrian mountains has so much natural beauty. Here are some of the best ways to take advantage of it!
- Explore the town: This is why you’re here of course! Soak in Hallstatt’s charm and beauty by strolling the quaint streets of the town, taking in the Austrian style homes, and basking in that UNESCO World Heritage view.
- Evangelical Church + Cemetery: Make sure to visit Hallstatt’s iconic church and unique cemetery. The views from the church’s balcony overlooking the lake and town are pretty spectacular as well!
- Hallstatt Skywalk: About a 10 minute walk from the town’s center is a cable car that will take you up to a viewing platform, about 1,000 feet above Hallstatt! Make sure to bring your camera for those stunning panoramic lake views.
- Hop on a boat: Where can you find one of the best views of Hallstatt? From the lake! Rent a boat for the the afternoon — from swan paddle boats to electric boats, you have a few rental options depending on your preference! Another option is to hop on the ferry for a ride across Hallstatt Lake.
- Skiing: If you’re visiting Hallstatt in the winter months, make sure to check out the nearby Dachstein West, a connected ski area with access from the villages of Gosau, Russbach and Annaberg.
