Each time I go to Europe, I try to visit at least one country I’ve never been to before. This summer, I decided on Slovenia after seeing some stunning photos of Lake Bled. As we began our drive to Slovenia from busy Hallstatt, Austria, we weren’t sure what the next few days would entail but we hoped to find lots of natural beauty, peaceful lakes and quiet little towns. I didn’t know it yet but I was about to find one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Europe!
Here is stunning Slovenia in 20 photos
After crossing the border from Austria into Slovenia, we began to see the scenery change from sprawling hills to lush greenery. Our drive continued until the roads became smaller and less crowded and the buildings were few and far between. We finally reached the small town of Ribčev Laz set on the edge of Lake Bohinj. This quaint town was made up of several buildings, a picturesque church and a little bridge across the river pouring from the lake.
We continued on our drive along side the lake, until we finally reached the furthest side of the lake.
Our home for the next few days was a charming cabin set in the very small town of Ukanc, roughly translated to mean “the end of the world.” And, it certainly felt like it!
Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake with crystal clear waters and is set in Triglav National Park, home of Slovenia’s Julian Alps. During the winter, the area is a popular ski destination with Mount Vogel sitting at 6,300 feet. But during the summer, the area is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the lake.
We spent our days in Lake Bohinj on the beautiful lake, hiking, and exploring Mount Vogel. We took the cable car up to the top of the mountain where we enjoyed breathtaking views of the Julian Alps (including the highest mountain, Mount Triglav) and had a traditional Slovenian lunch. Another highlight was hiking to Slap Savica, a stunning waterfall that’s glacial water feeds down into Lake Bohinj.
After our relaxing time on serene Lake Bohinj, we headed off to our next destination: Lake Bled.
Lake Bled has become known for its picturesque views and island that sits in the middle of the lake. Sitting on this small island is a church where, legend says, if you ring the church bell, you’re granted one wish.
Around the lake, there are dozens of row boats for rent — the perfect way to get a close up view of the Lake Bled island!
Our final stop in Slovenia was the capital, Ljubljana. This smaller city was full of charm and rich in culture! We spent the day exploring the old town buildings, cute markets, outdoor cafes and shops.
Slovenia definitely won my heart and I hope to be back some day!
