Maya Bay has been on my bucket list for the longest time so I was so excited when we finally made it to Koh Phi Phi! The bay is surrounded on three sides by limestone cliffs resulting in a dramatic and beautiful backdrop for the bluest waters and white sand beach. The bay is on an island (“Koh Phi Phi Leh”) considered national park so there are no restaurants, shops or people living on the island (besides park rangers). Koh Phi Phi Leh has become famous for its beauty and has been featured in a few movies (including ‘The Beach’ with Leonardo DiCaprio) and is now very well-known. We had heard that the bay can be packed with hundreds of people in tour groups on any given day, so we decided to wake up at dawn and take a long tail-boat there on our own. We arrived at 7am! Although there were a few other people who had the same idea, the bay was relatively deserted! Our early wake up was so worth it – the beach was incredibly beautiful and the seclusion made it feel like a hidden treasure.
We stayed on the nearby Koh Phi Phi Don (separate from the national park, and where all the hotels, restaurants and shops are) for three nights and had a blast exploring the island. One of my favorite parts was all the fruit stands – they had a huge variety of fresh fruit including my favorite… coconuts!
If you are going to Thailand, don’t miss Maya Bay and Koh Phi Phi Leh… just make sure to do it early!
