While researching things to do in Porto, I learned of a bookshop that supposedly inspired Harry Potter author, JK Rowling, in her depictions of the Hogwarts library. As a huge Harry Potter nerd, visiting this library – Livraria Lello – was the first thing we had to do in Porto.
Read below for my experience visiting Livraria Lello!
Visiting Livraria Lello
Livraria Lello has been named one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and with its chalky white Art Nouveau facade, the bookshop draws your attention even from the street standing out amongst busy bakeries and apartment buildings.
The interior is even more awe-inspiring with a Neo-Gothic design complete stained glass windows, seemingly endless shelves of books and a grand, crimson red staircase that lands right in the middle of the first floor.
With its beauty and connection to the Harry Potter series, Livraria Lello has become a popular attraction in Porto. The bookshop now charges an entrance fee (approximately €5) but you’ll receive a refund if you purchase a book!
Stepping into the bookshop is like entering the set of a Harry Potter movie, more specifically, Hogwarts library. Tickets can be purchased on the corner next to the bookshop where they also have a few Harry Potter themed photo ops so get your wands ready!
Know Before You Go
- Make sure to purchase your tickets on the corner next to Livraria Lello before trying to go in!
- Be flexible with your timing if you can! When I visited, there was a line when I first got there so we stopped at a coffee shop for a drink and when we came back there was no line (score!).
- The ticket shop has storage lockers for bags and backpacks (as these are not allowed in the bookshop).
- Photos are allowed but just make sure to keep your flash off.
- Address: R. das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto.
- Store Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 10:00am – 7:30pm
