This small island is located in the Adriatic Sea off Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. While Croatia has over 1,000 islands, Vis island is unique for a few reasons: it’s the farthest inhabited island from the mainland and it was used as a military base for the Yugoslavian army and was closed to the public until 1989.
The island was also featured as the backdrop of Mamma Mia 2 — one of my favorite movies!
We spent one magical day in Vis wandering the town, floating in the sea and soaking in the history.
Here’s how to spend one day in Vis, Croatia!
Explore the Abandoned Submarine Tunnel
Vis island has a ton of military history and one highlight is Jastog, the abandoned submarine tunnel located about 10 minutes from Vis town. Whether or not you’re interested in military history, the submarine tunnel is great for exploring, swimming and cliff jumping.
One of my favorite memories from our trip to Croatia was spending the day swimming in this cove with its clear, turquoise waters and colorful fish. And paddleboarding through the submarine tunnel was an experience I’ll never forget!
Stroll through Vis Town
We based ourselves in Vis town for the evening and spent a few hours wandering around the cobblestone streets, taking in the marina views and reenacting scenes from Mamma Mia 2 (kidding, but only because I was the only Mammia Mia fan in our group!).
Catch Sunset at Fort George
Set up on a hill on the Western side of town, this historic fortress has been converted into a sunset bar and restaurant. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun go down while enjoying a beverage!
Dinner at Konoba Lola
Wrap up your one day in Vis with a delicious dinner! In a lush courtyard garden setting, this restaurant serves up farm-to-table style food with vegetables grown in their own garden. There are multiple tasting menus to choose from where the chef guides you through a culinary adventure.

Hello!
We are travelling in Croatia in September and would love to visit Vis but not sure we can dedicate more than a day. I’m wondering how you got to and from Vis for a day. None of the ferries from Split seem to offer enough time and the ferry from Hvar seems to only allow a day trip to Hvar and back to Vis, given the times.
I would love to hear how you managed this.
Thank you!
Celeste

Hi Celeste,
I’m sorry I’m not much help with the daily ferry schedule to Vis as we visited on a gulet boat! Hope you are able to swing it as it’s a beautiful island and good luck with the Croatia planning 🙂
