Salzburg is a charming Austrian city nestled on the base of the Eastern Alps. It’s known for its beautiful baroque architecture, as the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for the movie, The Sound of Music (one of my favorites!). It’s a small city and can easily be explored in a day or two.
If you’re planning on stopping in Salzburg for the day, here’s the perfect itinerary for exploring some of the highlights.
Read below for how to spend one day in Salzburg, Austria!
Visit Schloss Mirabell Gardens
Start your morning at the opulent Mirabell palace and gardens! If you’re a Sound of Music fan, you’ll recognize these beautiful gardens from the ‘Do Re Mi’ scene. The gardens open at 8am daily so if you’re an early riser, you can beat the crowds.
Stroll around Getreidgasse
Stroll along this famous street known for its shopping and cafes in the Old Town (Altstadt) area. If you’re looking for a few souvenirs to bring home, this is where you’ll find them!
Lunch at Gasthaus Stadtalm Cafe
Head up to Gasthaus Stadtalm Cafe for a delicious lunch with sweeping views of Salzburg and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Enjoy some traditional Austrian food and beer while soaking in the views.
Explore the Hohensalzburg Fortress
Work off your lunch by walking to the Hohensalzburg Fortress from Gasthaus Stadtalm Cafe — it’s a short hike with beautiful views!
Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Salzburg’s greatest landmarks. Walk the grounds of the largest fully preserved castle in Europe, visit the Marionette Museum inside the castle walls and take in the stunning panoramic views of Salzburg and the Alps.
Stay at Hotel Schloss Mönchstein
One of the highlights of my time in Salzburg was staying at this charming hotel! Sitting atop a hill overlooking Salzburg, Hotel Schloss Mönchstein has some of the best views in the city. Spend the rest of the afternoon swimming in their infinity pool and have dinner in their elegant restaurant complete with a stunning Chihuly centerpiece. And, don’t forget to try their apple strudel (I’m still dreaming about it!).
