Planning a quick trip to Croatia? Consider spending a few days in Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic sea located in northern Croatia. This beautiful region is known for its stunning coastal towns, world-renowned truffles and fascinating history, making it the ideal destination for a weekend getaway.
Read below for the perfect Istria itinerary!
– DAY 1 –
Explore the romantic harbor town of Rovinj
Rovinj (pronounced ‘Roh-veen’), a small fishing port village known for its beauty, is a made up of a maze of narrow cobblestone streets set right on the sea front. Spend the day strolling the charming streets, shopping for local goods (seriously, make sure you get some truffles if you’re a truffle fan!) and exploring the harbor.
Sunset at Valentino Champagne + Cocktail Bar
For the most beautiful sunset spot in town, head to Valentino Champagne + Cocktail Bar! There are two sections to the bar: the champagne bar that offers champagne and light bites on a patio that stretches out over the sea or the more laid-back cocktail bar with cushions perched on the rocky coastline.
Either way, you’re in for a great night and hopefully a spectacular sunset show!
Dinner at Konoba Kantinon
Nestled in the quaint harbor, Konoba Kantinon serves up delicious, traditional Istrian food with fresh, local ingredients. Opt to sit outside for beautiful harbor views!
Stay the Night in Rovinj
Rovinj has some of the best hotel options in Istria! Here are some of the standouts:
- Grand Park Hotel Rovinj: Opening Spring 2019, this hotel from Maistra Hospitality Group is already drawing a lot of buzz for its beautifully designed interior and luxury amenities like private plunge pools with views overlooking the Old Town.
- Hotel Lone: Another beautiful and upscale hotel by Maistra Hospitality Group, Hotel Lone is highly rated for its luxurious pools, high end restaurants, night club and proximity to town (15 minutes walk).
- Hotel Delfin: This modern hotel is moderately priced, is just minutes from the marina and has free bicycles for guests to use!
- Island Hotel Katarina: This charming hotel is located on an island just across from Rovinj. Relax on the hotel terrace overlooking the Old Town, close enough but away from the hustle and bustle.
- Hotel Angelo d’Oro: Formerly a Bishop’s Palace in 17th century, this elegant boutique hotel is located in Rovinj’s historic quarter — a perfect base for exploring.
- Hotel Adriatic: Looking to be in the center of it all? Hotel Adriatic has a luxurious boutique hotel feel right in the middle of the harbor!
– DAY 2 –
Visit the Pula Arena
On your second day in Istria, head to the nearby city of Pula… because you can’t leave Istria without visiting Croatia’s Roman amphitheater! Step back in time and explore one of the best preserved colosseums — the Pula Arena has all four side towers with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved.
While it may not be as large as Rome’s colosseum, I actually enjoyed the Pula Arena even more because visitors are permitted to explore the entire structure (and its typically much less crowded!)
Cliff jumping at Galebove Stijene
Pula’s rocky coastline and turquoise waters make for excellent cliff jumping! Head to Galebove Stijene beach for the best cliff jumping spots — and if cliff jumping isn’t your thing, you can also explore the coastline and sea caves by kayak.
Spend the rest of the afternoon swimming in the sea and exploring the stunning coastline. Just don’t forget to bring a pair of water shoes and watch out for sea urchin!
Dinner at Farabuto
What better way to end your weekend that with a delicious meal at Farabuto! We had such a memorable evening here — the staff were warm and friendly, the food was delicious and topped with tons of truffles!
