With its 1000s of islands, lush mountains, sparkling turquoise sea and feature in Game of Thrones, Croatia is one of Europe’s top summer destinations.
It was my first time visiting Croatia and I spent 10 days exploring the region of Istria (famous for its truffles!) and island hopping along the Dalmatian coast.
Here are 20 photos to inspire you to visit Croatia!
After spending five amazing days driving through beautiful Slovenia, we arrived in northern Croatia.
Our first stop was the region of Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea filled with beautiful coastal towns, hilltop vineyards, gourmet cuisine and ancient Roman history.
We started our trip off in Rovinj, a little seaside town with a maze of cobblestone streets, a quaint harbor and a beautiful hilltop church.
We spent the day wandering around the town, popping into shops and tasting truffles. But, my absolute favorite memory from Rovinj was ending the day at a cocktail bar located right on the rocky coastline where we saw one of the most spectacular sunsets!
Our last stop in Istria was Pula, a port town known for its Roman amphitheater and stunning rocky coastline. The Pula Arena is the most well-preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy and we loved that there were no crowds so we could really take in the ruins.
After Istria, we drove to Split where we boarded our gulet boat to island hop for a week! We spent our days exploring different islands, anchoring in little coves to swim and soaking in the Croatian culture. And while all the islands were beautiful, my favorite island stops were Vis, Korčula and Vela Luka.
Vis island was featured as the backdrop of Mamma Mia 2 and it had the most clear, turquoise water I saw during my time in Croatia!
Its military history is also another unique feature of the island as it was once used as a military base for the Yugoslavian army and was closed to the public until 1989!
Korčula town has been nicknamed ‘Little Dubrovnik” because, like Dubrovnik, it is a medieval walled city with tons of history and charm!
We spent the day exploring the Old Town’s maze of narrow streets, learning about the town’s history (did you know it was the supposed birthplace of Marco Polo?) and sipping on Aperol Spritz in a bar set atop one of the town’s medieval towers!
