So I finally made it to Catalina Island! Although it’s only 22 miles off the shore of Los Angeles, I had never visited! On clear days, you can see this island (especially from OC!) from shore. Looking out at this big island but not knowing what was there, it’s always had a little bit of mystery to me.
We set off on the Catalina Express from Dana Point and just over an hour later, we finally arrived on this beautiful island. Avalon is the island’s main town (90% of the residences live here!) and is made up of a cute, little downtown area with shops, restaurants and bars. There is also a pier that extends into the harbor and overlooks the Catalina Casino. This round building has become a landmark and was built almost 80 years ago by William Wrigley (as in the Wrigley chewing gum!).
We spent the afternoon wandering the downtown area, walking the pier, eating gelato (from Scoops!), and stopping at Luau Larry’s for one (or maybe two!) their famous Wiki Wacker drinks.
We finished our amazing Catalina Island adventure by renting a golf cart (there aren’t many cars on the island.. we even heard there is a 20-something year waitlist to get a car there!). We rode up the hills and were able to get some stunning views of the harbor!
