If you’re planning a trip to the Greek island of Kefalonia, you can’t miss visiting one of its most picturesque villages: Assos. In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know to plan your visit to Assos including the top things to do, best restaurants, and where to stay.
I wasn’t originally planning to visit Kefalonia island. I planned a trip to the nearby island of Zakynthos but without direct flights there, I had to go to Kefalonia first. After doing some research, I decided to extend my trip to Kefalonia to more than just a layover. And… I’m so glad I did because this island is just beautiful and totally worth a visit!
And if you visit Kefalonia, you’ll find that one of the best places on the island is the picturesque village of Assos.
Here is the ultimate guide to visiting Assos, Kefalonia!
About Assos
Nestled on the west coast of Kefalonia, Assos is positioned on a picturesque peninsula, surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea
Assos is a small village known for its colorful houses, narrow streets, and a Venetian castle overlooking the bay. The village is a very charming setting for leisurely strolls, relaxing swims in the turquoise sea, or an authentic lunch at one of the delightful tavernas.
Along with its captivating beauty, Assos has a rich history that spans centuries. Steeped in tales of Venetian rule, Ottoman influence, and a resilient community, Assos has witnessed the ebb and flow of various civilizations. With its ancient roots and layers of history, the village can offer a unique perspective on the cultural tapestry of Kefalonia.
One of the most pivotal events in recent history was the devastating earthquake of 1953. The earthquake caused widespread destruction across Kefalonia, leading to the abandonment of many traditional buildings, including homes and churches.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, efforts were made to reconstruct Assos, with a focus on preserving its historic charm. The village gradually recovered, and today, its well-preserved architecture and Venetian castle attract visitors seeking a glimpse into the island’s past.
This charming village, with its pastel homes, cobblestone lanes, and historic castle, invites travelers to step back in time and experience the authentic Greek island lifestyle.
How to Get to Assos
Kefalonia is home to one airport, Kefalonia International Airport (EFL), and you can book direct flights to Kefalonia from major European cities or connect through Athens.
The island is also well-connected by ferry services from various ports in Greece. The main ferry ports serving Kefalonia include Patras on the mainland and other Ionian Islands like Zakynthos and Ithaca. The island has multiple ferry ports, including Sami and Poros.
To best way to reach Assos is to rent a car and drive! The island is quite large so the drive time will vary depending on where you’re coming from. From Argostoli, it’s about a 50 minute drive, and 40 minutes from Sami, or just 30 minutes from Fiskardo.
We were staying in Lourdata so we drove about 1 hour and 10 minutes… Which honestly went by really quickly! My husband and I love exploring by car so we really enjoyed all the scenery along the way — which was lots of rolling hills with plenty of sheep. Be careful of sheep in the road while driving!
Once we got to the coast, the journey itself was captivating, offering sweeping views of the Ionian Sea and the lush landscapes and olive trees that characterize Kefalonia.
From the main coastal road, Assos is located at the very bottom of a steep hill so the road to get there is very winding with a few hairpin turns. It’s a little nerve-racking but doable if you drive slowly and cautiously.
Once you reach the bottom of the hill, you can park your rental car in one of the public parking lots. Parking is free but can be tough during the busy summer months — if the smaller lot next to the village is full, there is a larger one that is just a short walk away.
Best Time to Visit Assos
The best time to visit Assos, Kefalonia, depends on your preferences for weather and the level of tourist crowds. Here’s what to expect during each season:
Spring (April to June): a delightful time to visit Assos as the weather becomes mild and pleasant. The landscapes are lush and green, and wildflowers bloom, creating a picturesque setting. Tourist crowds are relatively low compared to the peak summer months.
Summer (July to August): high tourist season in Kefalonia with hot weather ideal for beach activities and outdoor exploration. The village experiences an increase in tourism.
I visited Assos in August which is peak season — the weather was hot so we enjoyed swimming in the sea and hanging by the beach. Overall, the town was a bit buzzy but I was actually surprised it wasn’t more crowded!
Early Fall (September to October): Early fall is a great time to visit Assos as the weather remains warm, and sea temperatures are pleasant. Crowds begin to taper off after the peak summer season, providing a more relaxed atmosphere.
Late Fall to Winter (November to March): the quieter seasons in Assos, with fewer tourists. The weather becomes cooler, and many businesses may be closed during the off-season.
Things to do in Assos
Assos is a small, quaint town so you can explore at a relaxed pace… But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to occupy your time on a day trip to Assos!
Stroll the Charming Streets
Begin your exploration of Assos by wandering through its narrow alleys lined with pastel houses. The traditional architecture, combined with vibrant bougainvillea and geraniums, creates a postcard-perfect setting. Immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere as you encounter friendly locals and discover hidden corners of the village.
Relax on the Harbor
As you approach the village’s harbor, you’ll be greeted by fishing boats bobbing gently in the clear waters. The harbor is lined with open-air tavernas and cafes offering a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely meal or a refreshing drink. Sample local cuisine while savoring the views of the blue sea and the distant shores.
I love the slower pace in Greece and it was so nice to just have a drink at a cafe and take in the views of the sea!
Hike up to Assos Castle
One of the highlights of Assos is its Venetian castle, perched on a hill overlooking the village and the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. The castle, dating back to the 16th century, provides a glimpse into Kefalonia’s storied past and offers an opportunity for exploration.
The castle was strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the surrounding coastline, providing a defensive vantage point against potential invaders and pirate attacks. It served as a protective fortress for the local population, offering refuge during times of danger.
As you ascend to the Venetian fortress, take in panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the charming village below.
The castle of Assos is open daily from 8am to 8pm and entrance to the castle is free. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to hike each way so make sure to wear comfortable shoes, wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring plenty of water!
Relax on the Beach
Spend a relaxing afternoon on Assos Beach, where the tranquil ambiance and the shade of cypress trees create an ideal setting for unwinding.
The small cove gives way to a pebbly beach where the calm, clear waters lap up on the shore — making it the perfect place for a relaxing swim in the shallow waters. You can bring a towel and just plop down for the afternoon or there are a few sun loungers available for rent on the small beach.
Get on a Boat
In my opinion, the Greek islands are best explored by boat as some of the most beautiful coves aren’t accessible by land.
Rent a small boat from Conteco Assos and explore the surrounding coves and secluded beaches on your own. The owners of Conteco will give you detailed instructions on the boat, advice on where to go, the best routes, and even provide you with a speaker for music and a cooler bag for your drinks and food. Sounds like the perfect day, right?!
Or, if you’re not feeling confident enough to take out one of the private boats on your own, you could always book a sailing cruise with Assos Sailing. The private sailing cruise includes a captain that will show you the best beaches and sights in the area around Assos!
Watch the Sunset
Assos is renowned for its mesmerizing sunsets, casting a warm glow over the village and the sea. Find a cozy spot along the waterfront in a romantic setting to witness the magic of the sunset. The changing colors of the sky create a captivating spectacle, making it a moment to cherish!
Visit Myrtos Beach
Just a short drive away (about 15-20 minutes) from Assos village is the most famous beach on the island: Myrtos Beach.
The beach is renowned for its natural beauty, characterized by turquoise waters and a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by limestone cliffs.
You can drive down to the beach to relax on the pebble sand, swim in the clear waters, and enjoy the breathtaking views. Or simply stop at one of the viewpoints along the road providing panoramic views of the beach below…. A great place for a photo!
