When traveling to Greece, Athens is often the first stop on people’s itinerary since Athens has the largest international airport in the country. The city is a great introduction to Greece and is filled with history, culture and delicious Greek food! After spending an amazing few days in Athens, there were a few things that stood out.
Read below for 7 things you can’t miss when visiting Athens!
1 – Visit the Acropolis
This is pretty much on everyone’s itinerary because it is one of the most famous sights in Greece! No list of ‘must sees’ would be complete without the Acropolis and when you are standing below the Parthenon in awe, you’ll understand why!
2 – Shop the Flea Markets in Monastiraki
This neighborhood is close to the Acropolis and is perfect for an afternoon of shopping. This gorgeous square has plenty of little shops to browse and a flea market to pick up souvenirs as well.
3 – Stop by Little KooK for Dessert
Located in a small side street of the Psyrri neighborhood, Little KooK is a themed cafe serving desserts and drinks. It’s worth a visit for the fun decor alone – there is a life size dragon on the roof!
4 – Check Out the Plaka District
While it is quite touristy, this neighborhood is also one of the oldest and most charming in Athens. Browse through the shops or stop at a cafe for a freddo cappucino.
5 – Grab Drinks at Couleur Locale
After exploring the city by foot, head up to this rooftop bar to see Athens from above. Overlooking the Acropolis, the view at Couleur Locale cannot be beat (and neither can the sangria!).
6 – Explore Kolonaki District
Set on the slope of Lycabettus hill, this neighborhood has become known for its upscale shopping with trendy boutiques and fine dining restaurants. Pop by Oikeio for dinner for some traditional Greek food in a cute and cozy taverna.

7 – Relax at Astir Beach Club
When visiting Athens in the summer, there’s no better way to cool down than with a trip to the beach! While located about 30 minutes outside of the city center, Astir Beach Club is a great way to spend the day.

I enjoyed your post. I’m here now and just want to warn tourists about scams. We dined at a sidewalk wine bar near our hotel King George, . A woman with a baby came by begging. She had a sign which she set on our table. We waved her away. Unfortunately she stole my iPhone which was on the table, where she set her sign. It was so careless and I’m kicking myself. But she distracted us and stole the iPhone. Beware!

Great photos! Sure some parts of Athens are very “touristy” but if you’re a tourist there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s all about planning ahead and deciding what you want to see each day.
